Chow Yun Fatt praises Bowie Lam's acting in Gem of Life

The cast of TVB mega-drama The Gem of Life, Bowie Lam, Maggie Siu and Kenny Wong were at a fruit store filming for TVB Scoop. During filming, the 3 actors bumped into Hollywood star, Chow Yun Fatt. Chow was very cordial and praised Bowie, Maggie and Kenny's acting in The Gem of Life. The three of them felt flattered by Chow's praises.

Bowie expressed his appreciation for Chow's kind words. "This is a very good New Year present, I admire Fatt Gor (Chow) very much, in front of the camera his acting is exquisite, off camera he is very cordial to everyone," Bowie said. Bowie also shared that he has three drama series to film this year and he has a packed schedule. He also wished all Hong Kong people success in their work this new year.

Moses Chan and Ada Choi showed off their vocal skills

Ada Choi and Moses Chan attended a Christmas Catwalk Function. They played games with the audience and even selected children to join them on stage. Moses chose a little girl who had western look and prompted the host to comment, "Moses Chan likes part western girls." Ada and Moses also showed off their vocal skills by performing a duet. Ada was rewarded with kisses from the group of children.

Reporters quickly asked Ada if she felt any urge to have children in which she denied. Ada said that having children around during Christmas make the atmosphere very warm and lively. She reiterates that she doesn't plan to have any children for at least two years. Work is still her primary focus, also childbearing will affect her health. As she is currently filming Superwoman, she lacks sleep and this is not the time to think about having children. Once her health improves, she will think about it.

Although Moses showed off his vocal skills, he emphasised that he has no wish of becoming a singer. Moses, who sang the sub theme for The Gem of Life said he is an actor who loves to sing. He has no wish of releasing an album and will stick to singing drama themes.

Cast of The Gem of Life tries Golfing

Cast of blockbuster drama series The Gem of Life went for a round of golf as part of a promotional event. Bowie Lam, Ada Choi, Maggie Siu, Kenny Wong, Queenie Chu, John Chiang and Lee Si Kei were among those who showed off their golfing talents.

Ada, who played the role of Jessica Hong, shared that she used to take golfing lessons. However, she stopped golfing because she did not want to have tanned, muscular arms. Her husband, Max Zhang Jin, has now taken up golfing so Ada offers to be his buggy driver. Ada also expressed her disappointment that the ratings for The Gem of Life was not up to expectations. However, Ada has a silver lining - she receives good feedback from viewers about her character!

Maggie Siu, on the other hand, is not worried about the ratings of the series. She also revealed that she plans to host a Christmas party for her fellow co-stars and hopes that Gigi Lai (who has retired from the entertainment industry) can spare some time to join in the celebrations.

The Gem of Life: A look at Sylvia & Calvin Moments

Sylvia Hong and Calvin Ko started the series as enemies. Sylvia was asked to meet Calvin at one of his poolside party to negotiate a contract between Calvin's company and So Mun, an artiste under Sylvia's management. Calvin, a renowned prankster, pushed Sylvia into the swimming pool causing her to be soaking wet from head to toe and late for a meeting with her husband. Sylvia retaliated by hitting Calvin on the head with the heels of her shoes.

These two continues to bicker and trick one another until Sylvia's marriage failed and she lost her job. Sylvia knew Calvin's company had always wanted to sign on Mun as their artiste and one of the criteria of Mun was to have Sylvia join Calvin's company as well. Calvin had no choice but to offer the job to Sylvia.

After working with Calvin for sometime, Sylvia realised that perhaps Calvin may have some feelings towards her. She took the initiative to invite Calvin out on a date and offered to cook him dinner at his place. She failed miserably at cooking and dinner was nothing short of disastrous. Calvin then took control of the kitchen and manage to surprise Sylvia with a well cooked meal. They began their relationship then.

The story of The Gem of Life is centered on the three Hong Sisters. It is their story which the producers and scriptwriters are telling us. The audience will be sharing their lives; the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations and the joys and excitement! Let's take a look at these 3 sisters individually. Which one can you related the most to?

Maggie Siu as Hong Nga Yin, Sylvia

Sylvia Hong is a rebel in her mother's eyes. When she was dating her ex-husband Tim, her mother made a remark about how Tim isn't suitable for her. And the next thing she did was to marry him right away. She is always standing at opposite ends with her mother. But she is also the one who understands her mother to the core. She can read into her mother's motives and intentions.

Sylvia is also a known workaholic. She's in charge of the entertainment department in Calvin Ko's media company. Sylvia has a unique relationship with Calvin. Initially they appear to be at each other's throats and yet they also complement each other well while working. Sylvia knows which buttons to push to get what she wants, and so does Calvin. Calvin even brought Sylvia to meet his mother, something he has never done in the past!

This relationship of theirs eventually progressed into a romantic one. Calvin treats Sylvia differently; cheers her up when she's unhappy and even cooks for her. It was a case of food poisoning that ousts their relationship to their colleagues. However, one of Calvin's pals, Sunny, isn't trilled to know about their relationship. He was upset. Sylvia felt guilty and assumed that Sunny had feelings for her but she was wrong. Sunny admit to her that he's gay. Can Sylvia - Calvin - Sunny work out this love triangle of theirs? Or will the three of them hurt in silence?

Gigi Lai as Hong Nga Tung, Constance

Constance's character is said to be the "weakest" among the 3 sisters. She's the most romantic, the most naive and only sees the goodside of everyone. Even when she's taken advantage of by her own sisters she doesn't retaliate for she loves her sister and believes that a family should remain united.

Constance start the series with a failed marriage. She was completely in denial and wouldn't accept that her marriage had failed until her mother spring a surprise on her - bringing her face to face with her husband and his mistress!

With the support of her family, Constance learned to stand up again. She worked as a sales assistant in the Diamond company her father worked at and at the same time undertake design courses for jewellery. It was around this time that she started a relationship with Fatt, a newspaper stall owner. She persisted in the relationship even when her mother objected to it. However, she broke up with Fatt when she realised that he lied and concealed many truths from her.

Constance then at the offer of Terrence Hoh joined his company as his private secretary. He find her sweet and sincere a total opposite from her conniving younger sister, Jessica. Terrence began to have an interest in Constance and began to pursue her. Constance was reluctant to start another relationship but in the end gave in to Terence's charm. Their sweet romance faced the biggest hurdle of their relationship when Jessica secretly married Terence's father, Martin in Phuket.

Terence was adamant that they continue their relationship but Constance, under pressure from her mother, decided to call it quits. What will become of this couple? Will their love triumph over all obstacles?

Ada Choi as Hong Nga Sze, Jessica

Jessica is the apple of her mother's eyes. She's the most ambitious, the most materialistic and the smartest of the three sisters. She knows what she wants and works her way through to achieve it.

At the start of the drama, Jessica is a happily married woman. She has a well off husband and is able to lead the lifestyle of the rich and famous. In fact, she's even dubbed the Queen of Heels for owning the most pairs of high-heel shoes in Hong Kong. But a twist of luck left her husband business at stake and the bright future she has in jeopardy. When her husband ranway to Taiwan, Jessica has to bear all his debts. Jessica tried to persevere through it but seeing she has no way out, her mother applied for bankruptcy on her behalf.

Jessica then worked at Daisy Ho's PR company and began dating one of Mrs Sung's godson's. It is at an opening for Mrs Sung's art gallery that she met Martin Hoh. Thus a friendship began between these two. She could confide in Martin and Martin could provide her with answers that stimulates her brain.

Jessica then aimed to work at Mellisa's PR company as well as call it quits with Mrs Sung's godson. Her new aim in her life was Martin Hoh. Her relationship with Martin was opposed strongly by Terrence, Martin's son and her father. However, it was a business trip to Phuket which throw Martin and her together. After Terrence's initial objection, Martin broke up with Jessica but a twist of fate brought the two of them back to Phuket. It was there that they both decided to get married in spite of all the objections and criticism they will face back home. Did Jessica marry Martin for his wealth or was it true love?

Ada Choi shelves baby plans

Ada Choi attended Olay's promo function recently. She was dressed all in red akin a huge "red packet" but Ada said she isn't a red packet, merely in the mood for Christmas!

Ada revealed that she will be working this Christmas, busy filming new drama Superwoman. Ada said as the current economy situation is bleak, it's good to have work. Ada expressed her concern for her skin, saying that with HD technology, every detail is viewable on camera. Ada shared that she uses more skincare products and revealed that prior to using those products on herself, she'll use her husband as a guinea pig. "Actually I have a new product that I'm using, I will use my husband's face to test, so my husband's face is a lot better now, got more handsome too," Ada said.

Reporters asked Ada if she and husband, Max Zhang, plan to have a baby soon. Ada said, "I need to film Superwoman, it's not the time to have kids, you want me to miscarry the baby! We will first enjoy the two-people world, having kids will think about later." Ada also has more jobs now due to the popularity of The Gem of Life. Even passerby's calls her by her screen nickname - Xiao Mei.

The Gem of Life cast does charity on visit to Singapore

The cast of TVB blockbuster drama series The Gem of Life is on a promo tour to Singapore and Malaysia. They will be promoting this series to TV drama fans in both countries.

However, the cast members - Lee Si Kei (Louise Lee), Bowie Lam, Bosco Wong and Maggie Siu, took a break from attending events and dropped by NKF Dialysis Center in Hougang Avenue 8 for a visit. The staff members and patients were delighted to meet the stars. The four stars were given a tour of the centre by Aljunied GRC MP, Yeo Guat Hwang.

Bowie Lam, whose mother passed away in June, said he doesn't mind meeting and interacting with patients or the elderly. "It’s nice to bring some cheer to people," he said.

Ratings sliding for TVB broadcasted shows

Recently it was reported that TVB laid off some employees. Due to that unfortunate news, the general mood at TVB is gloomy. The ratings for TVB anniversary drama series When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West and The Gem of Life has been gradually sliding.

When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West which features top fa dan, Charmaine Sheh and TVB big sister, Liza Wang, dropped 1 point, averaging at 28 points while The Gem of Life dropped 2 points and also averaged at 28 points.

The Gem of Life cast has confidence series ratings will improve

The cast of The Gem of Life - Bowie Lam, Moses Chan and Ada Choi, sailed out to sea on a yacht hoping to increase the ratings for this TVB anniversary series. They sailed all the way to Lamma Island for promo activities. Last week, the average ratings of The Gem of Life were dismal, not managing to surpass 30 points.

At Lamma Island, the three stars managed to attract the attention of local residents and tourists alike, who took the opportunity to take photos with their idols. The weather was cold, yet Ada was dressed in a tank top. When questioned by reporters, Ada said, "it's not cold. The sun is shining. Miss Hong Kongs aren't afraid of the cold."

On a serious note, Ada said although the ratings of the drama series is not high, the team has confidence. She explained that the drama needs to be watched over a period of time and it will only get better. Ada said netizens have been calling her by her character's name - Jessica Hong, and revealed that seasoned Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong praised her acting in The Gem of Life. She was happy that people in the entertainment industry are taking notice of her talents and hailed The Gem of Life as her representative piece. Ada had once said that she will give birth once she has produced a representative piece. When asked about this, Ada replied, "If the rating are high, then I'll give birth. I'll give birth to a piece of pork lah. If we reach 40 points, then yes. Maybe I'll give birth to a little tiger baby. We have confidence."

Bowie Lam is not disappointed with the ratings of the series. He is aware that his character, Calvin Ko, is well liked by viewers. Moses Chan also explained that he has confidence the ratings will improve later on. He also clarified that one cannot compare Moonlight Resonance with The Gem of Life. "The Gem of Life focuses on the courses of life, while the characters in "Moonlight Resonance" are more simple," explained Moses.

Ada Choi plans to electrify Moses Chan

Ada Choi has collaborated in 3 drama series with Moses Chan - Where the Legend Begins, Dance of Passion and The Gem of Life. They will soon be working together in their fourth collaboration, Superwoman (unofficial title).

Talking about their collaboration in The Gem of Life, Ada said most scenes that has Moses and her are those of them arguing. Ada plays Jessica Hong, the wife of Moses's father. Ada is full of praise of Moses, saying she admires his acting skills and also revealed that they are best of friends off-screen.

Ada assures fans that Moses will play her love interest in Superwoman. Even though she is already married (to China actor, Max Zhang Jin) she will still do her best to electrify Moses and create sparks for filming of Superwoman.

During this interview, Moses and Ada had to pose intimately. Moses complimented Ada for being a good actress as she never feared intimacy when filming. Ada Choi a 100% cook

Ada Choi recently recorded an episode of Starry Kitchen. During the taping of the episode, Ada had to demonstrate how to fry eggs with tomato. The Gem of Life star revealed that she learned to cook when she was 8, as such she doesn't have any problems preparing a meal. Mr Chow, the chef said that it is not suitable for 8-year olds to be learning cooking in the kitchen. Ada disagreed, saying that once she acquired the skills, they belong to her. Ada shared that she seldom cook nowadays as she is busy with work, but assures us that her cooking skills are 100%!

Ada, who recently tied the knot with China actor, Max Zhang Jin, explained that she is still not a 100% wife! She said she needs to spend more time and be more patient with him. Cast of The Gem of Life attended wine tasting

The cast of The Gem of Life turned up in full force for a Creative Wine Tasting event in Central recently. Ada Choi, Maggie Siu, Moses Chan, Bowie Lam, Kenny Wong, Linda Chung, Bosco Wong are among those who attended. They were split into two groups - one to sample cocktails and another to sample wine. Moses drank quite a bit till his face was red but his efforts did not pay off as the team of Bowie, Maggie and Kenny won.

Ada, who is known to have a penchant for red wine, shared that she got really drunk during her honeymoon in Japan. "I got really drunk and vomited, then I encountered some Hong Kong fans and they requested a picture with me. At the time because I was drunk and had a bad attitude, so I rejected them. My husband had to go apologize to fans for me," she revealed. Ada said she is monitoring the ratings for the Gem of Life and would also surf the internet to know what netizens are saying about the drama.

There was a scene in Gem of Life where Maggie hit Bowie's head with the heels of her shoe. Bowie explained that Maggie did use her real strength to hit him, so he did felt some pain. Bowie then shared that he visited some villages in China's mountain with Yoyo Mung. Although the roads to get there posed some danger, he felt that it's worth taking the risk as he get to help the poor and sick. It was a meaningful trip, he said.

Anniversary Series lack oomph!

Last week is not a good week for TVB dramas, in general. It's latest grand production, The Gem of Life, fell 3 points for its ratings for the second week of airing, averaging at 28 points. It's other Anniversary Series, When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West (helmed by Liza Wang, Charmaine Sheh and Joe Ma) also failed to shine, averaging at 26 points.

Hopefully these 2 dramas will fare better in the coming weeks. I, personally have not watched When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West but I caught the first 8 episodes of The Gem of Life. Somehow there wasn't any engaging scenes/plot that is making me want more of the show. The first 8 episodes are just laying down the foundation for more things to come, like an introduction. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the series, just not at a maddening pace. Maybe the plot is moving slowly and smoothly, after all there will be 82 episodes.

Gigi Lai announces retirement

During a function to promote The Gem of Life, Gigi Lai took the opportunity to announce her retirement from the entertainment industry. Gigi explained that she will now place even more focus on caring for her brother (who was injured in an accident last year). Shedding some tears when making the announcement, Gigi expressed that she has thought about this retirement issue for a long time. The Gem of Life will be her last series, also her farewell series to the industry that has served her well.

"The most important thing in life is not money, but the time you spend with your family. I entered the industry when I was only a teenager and have been in it for 29 years. Having tried everything from singing, acting in movies and dramas, I am thankful and satisfied with what I have achieved today," said Gigi. She might consider going back to school to further her studies, but her prime focus is still her family. Gigi further explained, "I am not going to take on any more commercials, attend any more award ceremonies, release any more albums or film any more shows. This will be the last time I am doing an interview."

Gigi's last words were full of praise and thanks, especially to her Gems co-stars, "I am happy that I was able to film such a great production like The Gem of Life, everything was filmed with care and the script is good. Thank you for all the support TVB, I want to thank every production team who has worked with me before, every actor who has worked with me before and every single one of my fans. I am forever a TVB artist."

The cast of TVB Anniversary Series, The Gem of Life, went on a luxury cruise to promote the series. Among those present were Gigi Lai, Ada Choi, Maggie Siu, Bowie Lam, Moses Chan and Wong Hei. The cast were treated to a splendid buffet meal as well as synchronized swimming performances.

The cast also made wishes with candles and placed them in the swimming pool, hoping for high TV ratings. The female cast member were extra cautious when placing the candles in the pool as they didn't want to wet their beautiful dresses. Gigi Lai jokingly said that she was also worried that Bowie, who was standing behind her, might push her into the pool. Bowie, Moses and Kenny Wong also performed a strip dance to the delight of all the ladies present.

Ada and Maggie's outfit were the most eye-catching. Ada explained that her outift was sponsored but what matters is that it suited the occasion. She also expressed her confidance in the series, "There are very few series that will air 2 episodes at once. I believe the ratings won’t be bad. I hope the audience will like it." A reporter complimented Maggie, saying that she (Maggie) and Ada had stolen the limelight from Gigi. Maggie was modest and said, "We can all alternate looking beautiful. Most important is being comfortable with what you are wearing." Maggie also echoed Gigi's confidence in the series but added that she will not put too much pressure on herself.

Synopsis:

Ada Choi was questioned by reporters about her mainland series which will be broadcast by TVB rival, ATV soon. Ada shared that everytime she filmed a mainland series, she will get clearance from TVB first to put all parties at ease. She also stressed that no one can control if the mainland series will air on which channel. Ada also explained that prior to filming, she has made it clear that if the series was sold to i-Cable, Channel Now or ATV, she will not participate in any promotion activities.
