The recently concluded drama series Beyond the Realm of Conscience is TVB's best series for 2009 in terms of viewership. The producer, Mui Siu Ching, expressed that she is pleased with the result. "I am very happy, 98 of every 100 viewers watched . Although the rating is 50 points, same as , we won by 1% of viewers," she says. Producer Mui also praised Charmaine Sheh's acting skills in portraying Sam Ho, particularly in the last episode. She also lamented that it's a pity that the voting for TVB's Anniversary Awards has ended earlier, if not, then Charmaine may even get more votes!

Susan Tse talks about Grand Empress Guo

Susan Tse's popularity has increased tremendously since joining TVB from rival station, ATV. This year alone, Susan Tse has starred in 2 TVB dramas; Rosy Business (with Wayne Lai and Shereen Tang) and Beyond the Realm of Conscience.

Susan Tse Beyond the Realm of Conscience TVB

Susan's performance as Grand Empress Dowager Guo caught viewers' attention when she uttered the line, "Jeh Jeh (sister) wants to borrow something from you, it's your head!" to Mary Hon in the series. Susan can be considered an experienced veteran in the industry, bringing her 46 years of acting experience with her to TVB 2 years ago. However, Susan has the tendency to take on villain roles which she does so well in.

Susan's portrayal of Grand Empress Dowager Guo is actively discussed in blog and forums. Her popularity among followers of the series is just as strong as the support for Charmaine Sheh and Tavia Yeung.

Susan Tse Beyond the Realm of Conscience TVB

Grand Empress Dowager Guo is a ruthless character who will stop at nothing to protect her position in the Imperial family. Nonetheless, Susan does not think that the Empress is too ruthless, after all she is only trying to protect her family. "Grand Empress Guo is the grand daughter of Kwok Chi Yee (a Tang Dynasty General), she comes from a very rich and powerful family while Empress Dowager Zheng (Mary Hon) was a maid who cleans her feet, from a very low class family. They are just like the modern day first wife and the second wife (mistress). Under these circumstances, how can I as the Grand Empress not wanting to get rid of her. Just look at me, I worry that someone might snatch my husband when I was young, and I worry about my son the Emperor when I am old. If you were me, am I a villain?" reasons Susan.

The success of Susan's portrayal of Grand Empress Guo can be measured by the number of curses she receives from the audience. Although the audience currently curses the Grand Empress for being evil, Susan suggests that they hold on until they watch episode 10, when the Emperor dies. Grand Empress Guo was then betrayed by General Ma and she was devastated. "In this series, I use my eyes to act. At the beginning, I used my eyes to look at the concubines, but at the end, I used my eyes to show I was desolate. I was practicing that at home, I couldn't help "eyeing" my husband. He was so frightened and asked me why did I look at him like that for?" says Susan.

Prior to filming, Moses Chan has to put on weight for his role as Emperor XuanZhong, but little do we know that Susan has to put on weight for her role as well. Susan disclose that she had to pile on 10 pounds to make Grand Empress Guo look fuller as women of the Tang Dynasty were of fuller figure. Looking back Susan admits that putting on weight is perhaps for the better. "It is good that I put on a bit of weight because I do look a bit better on screen. Moreover, the head decorations are very heavy, when we were filming, we had to be so careful. We even had to wear a neck collar to protect our neck when we were not in front of the camera. I must praise the producer for considering all the details in the costume design. The higher the rank, the more sophisticated the head dress and the costume are, and everyone's decoration is different." shares Susan.

Charmaine Sheh and Kevin Cheng are not awkward in each other's presence

During the filming of Beyond the Realm of Conscience, there were rumours of Charmaine Sheh and Kevin Cheng getting together. Then a few months later, rumours of them breaking up surfaced. But all these, to this day remains as merely rumours. Both artistes have always maintained that they are good friends and co-workers.

Cast of Beyond the Realm of Conscience TVB

Recently, the cast of Beyond the Realm of Conscience gathered for a day of fun at the 5th Annual David Fu Tau Lam Charity Cup. Both Charmaine and Kevin were in the same tug-of-war team that managed to raise HKD 60,000 (of which HKD 10,000 came from Kevin's pockets). Although it was noted that these two friends did not have much interaction with one another, they did stand together for a group photo.

Charmaine Sheh Beyond the Realm of Conscience TVB

Charmaine again stressed that Kevin and her are good friends and she is not embarrassed to see him. Responding to reports that Kevin's facial expressions changed when he was question by the Malaysian media about their relationship, Charmaine asked the reporters if that incident was true. Reporters asked Charmaine to "teach" Kevin to level up his EQ, but Charmaine assured reporters that Kevin has great EQ level. She explains that the rumours surrounding their relationship as well as the constant news about artistes competing for TVB Anniversary Awards are actually not news to her. These so-called news are just negative ways of promoting something.

Tavia Yeung was determined to be an evil villain

Tavia Yeung has been in the entertainment industry for 10 years now. She has always taken on "goody-two-shoes" roles. But all that changes in her 10th year. In Beyond the Realm of Conscience, Tavia takes on the role of Yiu Kam Ling the ultimate villain in the series. It is difficult for Tavia to act evil, as the most "evil" deed she does in real life is making fun of people! Tavia explained that someone actually laughed at her and claimed that she could not portray a villainous role, and as such Tavia decided to accept the role and was determined to do her best.

Tavia's role of a villain in Beyond the Realm of Conscience is very much hyped up. Many fans and even non-fans are eager to watch her portrayal of the evil Kam Ling. Tavia revealed that she decided to take on the role as a promise and challenge for herself! "Everyone said that I couldn’t do it. Everyone said that my look doesn’t seem like a bad person. Everyone said the same thing and even producer also said the same thing: Can portray a villain role? Therefore, I was determined to portray the evil role well," explained a very determined Tavia.

Although the role of Kam Ling is Tavia's very first chance of portraying an antagonist, she admits that acting "evil" is not that difficult. What's more difficult for her was to grasp and learn the complicated dialogues and script for the ancient series.

Tavia acknowledged that Beyond the Realm of Conscience was a hot topic among netizens even before the series premiered. She knows that the series will be popular among drama viewers but never did she imagined that she would be pick by fans and netizens as a strong contender for Best Actress Award at this year's TVB Anniversary Awards! "No matter how everyone said that it was good, but they haven’t watched it yet! Instead, I will tell them: Calm down, let’s watch the series first. Don’t say too much first and let’s give comments after you all watch! Therefore, when you asked me whether I am nervous or not in terms of awards? No! I dare not put high hopes and I prefer to maintain at a stable position. I am only nervous about my performance. I portrayed a good person and would turn evil after that. How to win audiences’ heart, how come I will change and whether my changes are rational or not. Most important for me is feedback from audiences," Tavia rationalised.

Tavia is the total opposite from Kam Ling. Kam Ling would stop at nothing to get what she wants, but Tavia believes that slow and steady improvements will guide her to the top. Tavia is one of the few actresses who are rumour-free even after 10 years in the industry. "Every year my career will improve although I will not suddenly bounce into a high position. Did I have a splendid result in my career? Of course I haven’t reached that stage yet. But it was better year by year!" explains a philosophical Tavia.

Tavia is contented with her achievements in these 10 years. She admits that what she has achieved so far are reasonable, but what matters was she went through each day happily! She doesn't compare herself with other artistes as she knows other artistes worked hard to reach where they are.

If Tavia does take home the Best Actress Award at TVB Anniversary Awards, she reveals that she would have to treat dinner. "Treating dinner is not a problem but this is a social interaction. I’m afraid of social interaction. This is my character. I hope that someone can help me to socialize and I pay the bill then it is OK. If no chance to gain awards, then I just have to work harder next year, really!"

Meanwhile, the other grand production, Born Rich averaged at 32 points (2.05 millions viewers) and peaked at 34 points. Born Rich lost about 100,000 viewers compared to Beyond the Realm Of Conscience! However, Anita Yuen and Jaime Chik both expressed their confidance for Born Rich.
Cast of Born Rich
Although Beyond the Realm Of Conscience has "won" the first round, Charmaine Sheh explains that she has never thought of "competing" against Born Rich. She acknowledges that the cast of Beyond the Realm Of Conscience has given their all during filming and it is nice to receive good feedback from the audience. She also states that the two series are of different genres, and perhaps Born Rich will give viewers a nice surprise at the later stages of the drama.

The premiere of Beyond the Realm Of Conscience also sees 2 little girls portraying the role of little Sam Ho and Kam Ling. Charmaine who plays Sam Ho is full of praises for the little girls. She admits to tearing during the scene when little Sam Ho scatter the ashes of her mother into the well.

Both Charmaine and Tavia Yeung disagree with viewers who compared Beyond the Realm Of Conscience with Korean drama, Jewel in the Palace. Charmaine thinks that viewers should continue to watch Beyond the Realm Of Conscience and see the drama development first before judging the series.

The producer of Beyond the Realm Of Conscience, Mui Siu Ching reveals that the girl who played little Sam Ho was picked after three auditions. They decided to select her although she "no front teeth and has single eyelid" because they want to keep the image of Sam Ho - a kind hearted person who grows up to be a beautiful woman.

Born Rich male leads an obstacle for Wayne Lai

Last night was the annual Lighting Ceremony for TVB. After which, the 2 blockbuster drama series, Beyond the Realm of Conscience and Born Rich premiered.

The annual TVB Anniversary Awards was pushed back this year to December. The reason for the postponement - no one knows for sure. However, there were speculations that the postponement was to enable the cast for both Beyond the Realm of Conscience and Born Rich to compete in the awards.

This year Rosy Business fared well during its broadcast. The 2 leads, Shereen Tang and Wayne Lai are speculated to be taking home the awards for Best Actress and Best Actor. That was before Beyond the Realm of Conscience and Born Rich premiered. Now netizens seem to be caught in a dilemma, they are spoilt for choice for their ideal TV King & TV Queen.

The male leads of Born Rich are hot favourites to challenge Wayne Lai for the Best Actor award while the female leads of Beyond the Realm of Conscience are giving Shereen Tang a run for her money for best Actress.

Last year's winner, Michelle Yim pledges her full support for Shereen Tang. " I already had my year, besides supporting Tavia Yeung and Charmaine Sheh [from Beyond the Realm of Conscience], I also really support Shereen Tang. If I really had to choose, I would choose Shereen, she has really worked hard in the recent years. Of course the other two did as well, but these three are going neck to neck," says Michelle.

Sheren Tang's chances at TVB Anniversary Awards look dim

Sheren Tang Rosy Business TVB

Sheren Tang was a guest in Stephen Chan's Be My Guest program. Reporters asked Stephen if he would give Sheren the Best Actress award at this year's TVB Anniversary Awards as she has lost out on that award back in 2004. Stephen says that it's still too early to discuss the awards. "There is a new concept for the TVB Anniversary Awards. We are planning to see whether we could postpone the Ceremony until the end of December instead," Stephen adds. Reporters were quick to point out that the postponement is unfair to Sai Nai Nai (Sheren's character in Rosy Business) as it would be such a long wait. However, Stephen assures everyone present that they will promote the series again when the time comes.

Sheren Tang Rosy Business TVB

Sheren adds that we are still in the first half of the year and there are still many unaired dramas. Sheren explains, "I am already very satisfied to have been able to film Rosy Business. Since 2004, it's no longer a matter to me. Awards will not give me any pressure. Stephen says if he was to give Sheren the Best Actress title, she would not be happy. "It would also mean the awards are fixed and Sheren is the type of person that like fairness. She hates things that are set," Stephen explains.

Stephen also reveals that Born Rich and Beyond the Realm of Conscience will most likely be TVB Anniversary series for 2009.

Selena Li and Tavia Yeung slap each other

Selena Li and Tavia Yeung are very busy filming for new TVB drama Beyond the Realm of Conscience. Both Selena and Tavia play the role of concubines/imperial consort. As expected, there are strong competition among the concubines as well as in-fighting among them to win the Emperor's favour. Selena and Tavia has to slap one another for a scene from the drama. However, these two are the best of friends when they are not in character.

Selena Li Tavia Yeung Beyond the Realm of Conscience

Selena explains that she has to keep long fingernails for her role as a concubine. As such, she is afraid of accidentally hurting Tavia when filming the "slapping scene". "You must grow your nails to portray a imperial concubine. Therefore I was afraid I would injure Tavia's face. I felt a lot of pressure. We tried different positions and attempted not to use real force. But the outcome wasn't great. In the end we decided to slap for real. But of course I didn't use any force on her. Later in the series, Tavia will slap me twice. I hope when we shoot those scenes she will go easy on me," says Selena.

Tavia explains that her face does not hurt from the slap but instead, it was her neck that is the one hurting. As reported earlier, the female casts have to wear heavy headgears for this series. However Tavia is quick to add that she will put up with the pain in order to film beautiful footages for the drama. She also explains that the higher the ranking a character has, the heavier the headgear would be.

Filming Beyond the Realm of Conscience is a pain

Tavia Yeung, Charmaine Sheh and Selena Li were involved with the filming of new TVB drama, Beyond the Realm of Conscience. The series is a period drama and the cast are required to be decked in period costumes. Not only the clothes and shoes but this time around, headgears are also required. Tavia has to constantly hold on to her headgear when filming and explained that the headgear is too heavy. It was revealed that her headgear weighs 4 kilograms! Tavia says, "For this series, the most difficult part is that my headdress is too heavy, right now my neck is swollen, each night I would have to treat it with medication."

Charmaine Sheh Tavia Yeung Selena Li

Selena Li, on the other hand, needs more than the headgear. As her character is pregnant, she need additional padding for her chest area as well as stomach. Selena is excited to be playing a pregnant woman as she explains, "This is the first time I'm a pregnant woman in an ancient series!" However, Selena shares that among the three additional items, the headgear is the most uncomfortable. "it's so heavy that half the time I'm forgetting my lines, it's due to it being in the way," she says.

Charmaine Sheh takes wearing the headgear and pain all in her stride. So how come she has it easier that the others? Charmaine reveals, "At this point in the series, I'm still a low level person, so I don't have as much on my head. When I become a concubine, I will have to wear the headdress as well, I'm kind of afraid that my head will be in pain then."

Charmaine Sheh hoping for the role of Lau Sam Ho

Charmaine Sheh, Lau Sam Ho

Charmaine Sheh, Susanna Kwan, Michelle Yim, Fala Chen and Moses Chan yesterday filmed the sales presentation for period drama, Lau Sam Ho. The weather was hot yesterday although it is now Autumn. When Charmaine was not filming, she quickly used an umbrella to shield herself from the scorching sun. Kevin Cheng will, reportedly, be part of the cast but he did not make an appearance yesterday. Apparently, Kevin was filming something else in the studios.

Mai Suet, Lau Sam Ho

The concept of filming sales presentation every year is merely for sales and advertising purposes. Sometimes, series that are planned may not actually be filmed, or sometimes the cast may change. However, Charmaine, Tavia Yeung, Michelle Yim and Susanna Kwan hope that this period drama will be filmed successfully. Susanna expressed that she wants this series to be filmed because she has never filmed a period drama before. It will be a fresh experience for her, plus she said the ancient costumes are very beautiful. The role of the villain once again falls on Michelle Yim.

Moses Chan, Lau Sam Ho

Lau Sam Ho is reportedly HK's version of Jewel in the Palace. The story is about the power struggle of the womenfolk in the palace. Moses Chan will take on the role of the Emperor, while Charmaine, the titular character - Lau Sam Ho. She will start off as a humble palace servant and work her way up until she successfully becomes the Chief of the Royal Kitchen.

Charmaine Sheh, Lau Sam Ho

Charmaine also hoped that the series will be filmed and also keep the cast feature in the sales presentation. She wants to work with both Michelle Yim and Susanna kwan.
